Peru is one of the world's greatest places for hiking. Just a simple day-trip can get you to unspoiled villages, pristine mountain lakes, and places where no tourist has ever been. The most popular routes are in Cuzco, particularly the Inca Trail. The trail is often full and you must reserve months in advance. Keep in mind that there are several other trails that lead to Machu Picchu, all of them cheaper, less crowded, and just as beautiful. Other places for trekking delights include the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash, Colca Canyon, Cajamarca, and Huancayo.
The most famous hike in Peru, perhaps in the world, is the Inca Trail and thousands of people travel to Peru each year to trek this route and enjoy its last reward Machu Picchu. However, with an Inca Trail bursting under the strain of the volumes of hikers, a number of other, alternative hikes are gaining in popularity, so don't limit yourself to the well-trodden path. Consider doing the Lares Trek which ends at Machu Picchu, passing through remote Quechua communities and a glacial landscape. Note: only 500 people per day area allowed to hike the trail (porters and guides included), so to avoid disappointment it is recommended to register at least three months ahead of the trek. Be aware that the Inca Trail is closed during the month of February. You will need to hike with a guide.
