White water rafting is quite popular in several areas of the country. Many will go on trips for a week or more exploring the Andes to the Amazon, while camping on riverbanks and cooking their own food. Cuzco provides the greatest diversity in trips. You can take a day-trip on the Urubamba or begin the descent from the Eastern high lands to the Amazon basin on the Apurimac. Other areas include Tarapoto, Lunahuana, Cotahuasi Canyon, and Huaraz. Many rivers are quite remote and rafters have died on several occasions. The rugged high Andean rivers are the best place for white-water kayaking and rafting. Trips range from a few hours to over a week of descending through mountain canyons into the Amazon rainforest and camping in the wilderness. Outfitters can be found in Arequipa and Huaraz, but Cusco has the best selection. Short floats can be done in Class II and III rapids on the Río Urubamba in the Sacred Valley, while longer trips descend the Ríos Tambopata and Apurímac into the Amazon with rapids reaching Class IV and some very challenging Class V ones. Most are navigated by rafts with experienced guides; kayakers can also join a rafting expedition.
Again, Peru is hard to beat for these adventurous activities. The rivers around Cusco and the Colca Canyon, as well as Huaraz and, nearer to Lima, at Lunahuana, can be exciting and demanding, though there are always sections also ideal for beginners. Cusco is one of the top whitewater rafting and canoeing centres in South America, with easy access to a whole range of river grades, from 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the Río Urubamba (shifting up grades in the rainy season) to the most dangerous whitewater on the Río Apurimac. On the Vilcanota, some 90km south of Cusco, at Chukikahuana there's a 5km section of river which, between December and April, offers a constant level 5. One of the most amazing trips from Cusco goes right down into the Amazon Basin. It should be noted that these rivers can be very wild and the best canoeing spots are often very remote.

Cusco is Peru's rafting capital. The most popular excursions are day trips on the Río Urubamba. These leave the city at 9 a.m. and return at 3 p.m., giving visitors about three hours on the river. Many companies also offer three or four-day expeditions on the Río Apurímac, which is probably the best known rafting destination in Peru. Despite operating out of Cusco, these trips require a four-hour drive to arrive at the river. The Apurímac is a special river because, as it is the largest contributor to the Amazon, some consider it the longest river in the world.
