MADRE DE DIOS TOURS
With a population of 90,000 people, Puerto Maldonado is by far the largest and most important city in the department of Madre de Dios, of which it is the capital. It is 183 m/600 feet above sea level and just 523 km/314 miles from Cuzco, but don't expect to get there by land.Well, at least not in a timely manner. French explorer FaustinoMaldonado founded Peru's "Capital of Bio-diversity" on July 10, 1902. Since that time, much like Iquitos, it has been home to a series of booms. First rubber, then logging. Presently the town is experiencing a series of ongoing booms associated with gold, oil, Brazil nuts, coffee, and tourism. All of which are causing a population explosion. The town still doesn't have the colossal feel of hus- tle and bustle like Iquitos, though. Rather, days drift away like butterflies in this lazy town at the confluence of two rivers, the Madre de Dios and Tambopata. The town itself offers very little for the tourist. There are few decent lodging options, good restaurants are scarce, there are nomuseums or sights; rather it is a base for trips to nearby lodges and parks. My advice is to avoid Puerto Maldonado altogether, and head directly to the lodges.
Characterized by wide avenues that narrow into mud lanes lined with unremarkable wooden buildings, the town offers little more to see than threewheeled motocarros (motorcycle rickshaws) and scooters. For the most part, travelers use Puerto Maldonado as a jumping off point to nearby attractions like Lago Sandoval, the Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja Sonene National Park. Vastly more relaxed than its larger jungle town relative Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado is a popular stop for Tambopata package tours.
