ICA & Southern Coast of Peru

Cancun Beach VacationSouth of Lima, five significant towns dominate the coastal desert region: Cañete, Chincha, Pisco, Ica and Nasca. Close to Pisco, the only one actu- ally near the ocean, the adobe Inca remains of Tambo Colorado make an interesting trip, perhaps rounded off by a great seafood dinner at the fisherman's wharf in San Andres. All five of these energetic and quite welcoming towns preserve important and intriguing sites from the three cultures. Around Pisco, 200km south of Lima, the unspoiled coastline is superb for birdwatching, while the desert plains around Nasca are indelibly marked by gigantic, geometric animal and alien-looking figures that were scratched into the brown earth over a thousand years ago. In the cooler hills above the desert coastal strip you can spot herds of the soft-woolled vicuña or see pink flamingoes in their natural Andean habitat at the stunning Lake Parinacochas. The Nasca Lines, a perplexing network of perfectly straight lines and giant figures etched over almost 500 square kilometres of bleak pampa, are southern Peru's most endur- ing and mysterious archaeological features. And for those interested in wildlife, Pisco and Nasca offer three of the most outstanding reserves in the country – the Ballestas Islands and Paracas National Reserve (outside Pisco, 20km south or so along the coast), and the rare vicuña reserve of Pampa Galeras (in the Andes above Nasca). One hour by car south of Nasca, in the middle of the desert, there's an amazing little museum at Sacaco, built over the fossilized carcass of a pre-historic whale.

See diverse species of aquatic birds and marine life such as sea lions, red boobies and Humboldt penguins while on a boat tour of the Islas Ballestas (near Pisco), nicknamed the poor man's Galápagos. Ubiquitous white droppings left by the colony of red bobbies have also earned the islands the name of Islas Guaneras. If the fauna is not enough muse over a giant sandstone carving on the face of one of the islands, the Candelabro de Los Andes, whose mysterious image and creation has caused just as much contro- versy as the Nasca lines. Ponder centuries old carvings in the desert sand near Nasca. The Nasca Lines are not just images and fi gures cut into the rock. Archaeologists believe they may be representations of a lost culture. The very shapes one fi nds there support the idea that their authors were traders, nomads, or even men from outer space, as the whale and the monkey are not species indigenous to this region of Peru. Dating the Nasca lines has proved a diffi cult science, adding to the enigma of their creation. Pair mystery with adventure the Nasca lines are only 8 kilometers (4.97 mi) away from the chance to sandboard alongside the nearby desert oasis Huacachina. Surf down sand dunes in Ica from a height of 2, 000 meters (1.25 mi, the highest on the continent).
