Introduction

For trekkers wanting to get off the well beaten tourist path and escape to a part of Peru that has changed little over the last 500 years then a trek through the spectacular scenery of the Lares Valley is a must. This remote and rarely visited region offers the trekker an insight into the real lives of the Andean farmer, dressed in their traditional brightly colored ponchos. You’ll have the opportunity to see thatched stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas. Inside the houses you’ll see guinea pigs running loose.

Tour Highlights

Day 1 : Drive to Calca and the Lares 3,230mt/10,595ft and the Cordillera Urubamba

. Start the 3-hour trek to the traditional village of Wacahuasi. The route gradually climbs through villages of traditional weavers, handicraft artisans and shepherds tending herds of llama and alpaca. Camp at 4,091m/13,418ft. (B, L, D)

Day 2 : Climb to Ipsayccasa pass 4,490m/14727ft where there are flocks of birds such as Andean goose and Andean gulls. After dinner, with the help of our guide, learn more about the life of an “arriero” (llama handler); how he and his family live, what they eat, etc. Today travel through a canyon, possibly spotting condors. Spectacular mountain scenery on the descent to Patacancha andean village 3,831m/12,565ft. Campsite (B, L, D)

Day 3 : Visit Patacancha village, visit their homes and enjoy they weaving, then hike down to Huilloc and Pumamarca ruins. Arrive in Ollantaytambo 2,820m/9,249ft in the afternoon, early dinner before boarding the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu village) 2,000m/9,020ft. (B, L, D)

Day 4 : Go to the ruins for a historical and archaeological, guided walking tour of the “Lost City of the Incas”. Visit famous sites like the Cemetery, Temple of the Seven Windows, the Intihuatana, Temple of the Condor and Temple of the Sun. Train back to Cusco in the afternoon. (B, L)
