Generally speaking, public transport has improved significantly over the last decade in Peru. Big modern buses cruise up and down the Panamerican Highway, linking all the coastal cities. They also strike up into the main mountain centres, including Cusco and Titicaca, and are cheap and pretty reliable

PERU TRANSPORTATION
There isn't really a good reason to rent a car in Peru unless you are working or exploring in a specific area where public transportation is hard to come by. Other than the Pan American Highway, roads tend to be bad, other drivers are often erratic, gas is expensive, taxis are cheap, distances are very great between cities, and inter-regional buses, flights, and trains are inexpensive. Check each city's section for car rental information. Lima is where you will find the cheapest rates, sometimes as low as $50 a day, although mileage charges often apply.
