It is hard to get a good taste of Peru in little time. The country is large and overland travel can be long. If going into high altitude, allow for time to acclimatize, especially if you are planning trekking, mountain climbing or other high-octane sports. If your vacation is short, focus your stay on just one region, to really get the most out of your trip. You can easily spend a week just in Huaraz, trekking through the Cordillera Blanca to little towns and Chavín ruins, or in the Chachapoyas realm, overflowing with mysterious archaeological sites like Kuélap, Revash and Karajía, as well as the Gocta waterfall. Flights to both these gateway cities can save you travel time. Many people will choose to visit Machu Picchu. If you cannot get a reservation for the Inca Trail, or would like to make your holiday a bit different, consider doing one of the other less-visited treks in the Sacred Valley, like Salcantay, Vilcabamba, or Ausangate in the Cordillera Vilcanota.
