Kisses on the cheek are customary in coastal cities upon greeting, while in the Andes a light hand shake is customary. If ever in doubt a handshake will suffice. Basic greetings usually involve at least a polite hello, how are you? Discussion of subjects such as politics, the economy, and one'smarital status or employments are not taboo, but religion often is. Many come dressed in adventure gear or Jungle Jim outfits, which is fine in most tourist-oriented places. If you plan on fine dining in Lima or Cuzco, or going to clubs in Lima or Arequipa, you may want to bring a dressier outfit or two. In most churches it is generally taboo to wear shorts, flip flops, tank tops, and anything that is overly revealing. As for Peru's Andean population, indigenas is the polite term, while indios is not. If you are called a gringo, don't take offense. It is a common term and often used. Also, Peruvian society is more male-driven than North America and many European countries. Gringas are safe to travel on their own, but are seen as more sexually open than local women and are often the target of unwanted advances.
